KMD Group was awarded the "2019 Most Promising Automotive Materials Innovation Award" at the 2019 China Automotive New Materials Application Summit Forum. This award was jointly organized by Shanghai Nonferrous Metals Association, Shanghai Automotive Engineering Association and Shanghai Metals Market. The judges of this review were from SAIC PV, SAIC GM, BYD, Geely, Great Wall Motor, BAIC New Energy, JAC, WM Motor, Changan Nio, Bosch, Mahler, Magna, Dechang, Tongji University, and Hasco Group. KMD Group won the award out of from more than 100 companies after months of comprehensive evaluation.

KMD' applied STOL76M (C19005), STOL95 (C18160) and hot-dip tinning products for this review.

Stol76M (C19005) Cu-Ni-Si alloy has good mechanical and physical properties, whose conductivity is up to 60% IACS and strength is between 400-600MPa. It has good resistance to stress relaxation and good bending properties. Excellent anti-coating peeling performance of Stol76M allows it to work under up to 150 °C. Stol76M is a key product of the national strategic Xinxiang industry in 2018. This material is often used in engines, connectors in steering systems, and other basic connectors of German mainstream brands. Moreover, it can also be used in 5G high-speed backplane connectors.

Stol95 (C18160) Cu-Cr-Zr alloy is also a key national strategic Xinxiang industry product in 2018. It has high conductivity and medium strength performance, of which the strength is up to 540Mpa and the conductivity above 86% IACS. It has excellent softening resistance to high temperature and outstanding stress relaxation performance at 200°C working environment. Thanks to the excellent high-temperature performance of this alloy, it can perform well in automotive charging systems and in 5G power systems.

Hot-dip tinning (HDT), which is a layer of 1-20 micron tin uniformly coated on the surface of copper and copper alloy strips, in order to improve the corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance of the original copper strip and to provide better solderability. It also reduces the Insertion and extraction force, the whisker generation and brings other advantages. Especially in the automotive industry, hot-dip tinning has proven time and time again that it is the best choice for corrosion protection and contact surfaces. Compared with electroplating, HDT is energy-saving and environmentally friendly, efficient and cost-effective. It can replace traditional electroplating products. In the meanwhile, it can fill up the domestic gap and realize the substitution of imports.

The new materials industry is one of China's seven strategic emerging industries and one of the top ten areas of “Made in China 2025”. Automotive copper benefits from the development of three-electric systems and electronic appliances. The amount of copper used in plug-in hybrid vehicles and pure electric vehicles is almost twice that of fuel vehicles. In the future, the product richness of the new energy market will be greatly improved. It is estimated that by 2025, the proportion of new energy passenger vehicles in the total number of passengers will increase from the current 6% to 20%, and the demand for copper strips will also increase.
